HW Review/Lyndon Johnson

  • US Government Spending: (1-4): 1: SS 2: Medicare 3: Medicaid 4: Defense
  • Lyndon Johnson: Playful, committed to finish what Kennedy had started. Created many new laws. He supported Civil Rights. Continued Kennedy's leadership in the war against poverty. Sent more troops over to Vietnman. People at home wanted the troops to come back home. Johnson did not want to run again as president. During his final days, he tried to negotiate peace with Vietnman but failed.

Geographic Vietnam

  • North Vietnam is north in relation with South Vietnam, vice versa.
  • Vietnam (both): Vietnam is very costal, the whole land has many rivers; wet.
  • Ho Chi Minh Trail-used to supply communists who are in South Vietnam.
  • US invaded Cambodia, happened when things went really bad for America.
  • Thailand was an ally of America.

Vietnam:
Rise of Ho Chi Minh - 1941 - He had established a political party called the Vietminh, where after fighting against Japan in WWII, declared Vietnam an independent nation and set up a nationalist government in Hanoi.
France's comback - 1949 - After asking America for aid, they went back to France and drove Ho Chi Minh out of Hanoi and into hiding in the countryside.
Ho Chi Min's comeback - 1949 - After being drived out, he gained control over large areas of the countryside.
Indochina War - 1950-1954 - France and Vietnam went to war with each other, though America was paying for most of the war cost.
Vietnam Freed - May 7, 1954 - The French defense of Dien Bien Phu had collapsed and France agreed to a settlement of the conflict; France left Vietnam for good.
Reunification - 1956 - Elections were held to reunite the country under a single government after the division caused by the Geneva Conference (though it was temporary, this division).
Reunification Failed - 1956 - Ngo Dinh Diem had refused to hold the election outlined in the Geneva Conference due to the fact that Vietnam would become a communist nation.
Diem's succeses - 1959 - Diem had started to eliminate the Vietminh supporters who stayed behind in the south after the partition.
Turnabout - 1961 - Ho Chi Minh had created the NFL in 1959, by this time it successfully destabilized the Diem regime.
Death - Autumn of 1963 - After Kennedy's tacit approval to a plot by a group of South Vietnamese generals, they staged a coup and assasinated Diem and his brother/principal adviser Ngo Dinh Nhu.

Vietnam War Timeline

  • The Vietnam War was basically a continuation of the Korean War, the main forces are the same, it's basically Communists versus Capitalists.
  • The Vietnam was all but just another event in the Cold War, just another excuse for the Soviets and the Americans to go to war with each other.
  • US wanted to help South Vietnam from communism.
  • Vietnam was born into US interest, US had to help.
  • Basically a way to contain communism in Vietnam; America's reason for joining was because of Truman's Containment Doctrine.
  • One way for America to increase its territory; imperialism
  • The USA wanted to help Vietnam, just to help, recieves nothing in return/humatairan rights.
The Vietnam War was not worth it since many Americans were killed, communist had eventually took over Vietnam, they spent a lot of money. America lost world power, Vietnam veterans were treated really badly when returning home. Nationalism, domestic tranquility took a big hit.

Counterculture

Basically a new youth culture that was scornful of the values and conventions of middle-class society.
Hippies - young Americans with long hair, shabby/flamboyant clothing, and a rebellious disdain for traditional speech and decorum.
Some things included smoking, drinking, using drugs...
Legalized abortion
Most hippies were located in Haight-Ashbury.

Feminism-the belief that women should have equal rights (as men) (politically, economically, and socially)
Women's Liberation-the freedom for women to do what they want (also to help women, such as victims of r and a, creating women's health clinics, day-care centers and abortion clinics. Women's independence; their own free will/choice.
Roe v. Wade - A US Supreme Court case about abortion (where they decided that abortion was legal). The new theory of a constitutional "right to privacy" was first recognized by the Court.

"Reaganomics"

  • reduced taxes
  • benefits to corporations and wealthy individuals
  • reduce government expenses
  • Legislative program to remove 40 billion dollars from government budget
  • Plan to have 3 years of 30% (which was cut to 25%) on individual and corporate tax rates

  • Deregulation of goverrnment in economy

Ronald Reagan

  • Challenger shuttle disaster, exploded.
  • His first wife Nancy had a large influence upon him.
  • He was nearly assasinated.
  • He used to be a movie star.
  • Oldest person to be elected president
  • Iran-Contra scandal, he had assumed responsibilites but was not guilty.
  • His core belief: less government.
  • His leadership won the Cold War; he became friends with his Soviet counterpart.
  • SDI hastened the end of the Cold War (though it was just fake...)
